1.Tour company must use locally owned infrastructure for accommodation and transport where possible.

2.Provide employment and leadership opportunities for local people. Make sure your tour guides will be locals.Spread the financial benefits amongst local people and operators.

3.Educate travelers and all participants about how and why they choose to travel green.

4.Limit the negative impacts to daily lifestyles of local people and physical impact of trips in all destination communities-particularly sensitive natural and cultural environments.

5.Does this company belong to a development agency or other group devoted to concerns in developing countries.

6.Do they support environmental, developmental and humanitarian projects operating in the given destination.

7.What is their policy on recycling while on the tour and what is done with waste that is
accumulated during that tour.

Travel Agencies no longer want brochures ! With the growing knowledge of the internet and its unlimited ways to supply quick and easy information on travel ,there is no need for brochures by the dozens any longer. Travel agencies are throwing away dumpsters full of brochures (remember to put them in the magazine recycle bins) . Brochures are a waste of the suppliers money (ever heard of E-brochures ?) and they are an environmental nightmare. Shipping Container Travelodge

This is a perfect green example of using recycled/reclaimed materials to build a structure. The Travelodge located in Uxbridge, England is constructed entirely from prefabricated shipping containers. This 120 room hotel used 86 shipping containers, retrofitted and bolted together onsite. The building contractor estimated that by using the structure’s prefab composition saved the hotel chain more than half a million pounds and at least 10 weeks of construction. They also noted that there was a 70% reduction in on-site waste. Upon construction completion, this unique hotel doesn't look any different than other Travelodge hotels. Travelodge plans to follow up with another version of this container hotel at Heathrow Airport. They expect to save up to 10 million pounds (18.6 million dollars) a year on hotel development by using this new method.

Hopefully more hotel companies will follow suit. We have many stockyards and piers filled with unused materials just waiting to be turned into your next hotel room.

Gaia's Green FeaturesWood Based Materials:

All lumber used for the hotel is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international network to promote responsible management of the world's forests.

Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants:

Low VOC (volatile organic compound) sealants and adhesives were used throughout the hotel for carpet, construction. Low VOC paints were used throughout the hotel. Both these strategies help improve the air quality within the hotel and have a positive effect on human health by improving the quality of air.

Carpet:

Carpet with recycled content. Our carpets contain post consumer recycled material in the backing, fiber and pad.

Construction Waste Management:

The contractor is committed to implementing waste diversion practices as an integral part of their operations. They provided a recycling station for paints. The contractor also provided a recycling station for cardboard. During construction, bins were placed on the property primarily for cardboard. All cardboard were recycled on the premises.

Stone:

All restrooms use recycled tiles and granite.

Water:

The project achieved a water use reduction of about 40%. DDLow flush toilets. All toilets produce 1 gpf (gallon per flush). Standard toilets produce 1.6 gallons per flush. All of our guestrooms are equipped with low flow showerheads. The koi pond uses recycled water from the site, which is then filtered and cleaned prior to entering the pond.

Environmental Quality:

Appropriately sized and efficient HVAC units are used throughout. These units are quieter and more efficient than standard HVAC systems and use a more environmentally friendly refrigerant than is standard. Aluminum exterior grates were used in all entrances of the property. This helps to minimize dust and particulates entering the building, therefore improving air quality.

Energy:

All windows used are efficient, low energy transmittable and reduce glare. Solatube tubular skylights are used throughout the hotel including our conference rooms, lobby and the hallways. These skylights magnify the sun's rays to deliver abundant light into the property interior spaces during the day. We save electricity by using these skylights. Solar panel provides 10% of our electricity. Cool reflective roof reflect heat therefore saving money in cooling costs.

Recycling:

Recycling bins in rooms and around property. Newspapers are not delivered to each occupied room. Newspapers are located in the lobby available for guests who actually read them. Bulk soap and shower dispensers are used in all guest rooms. This helps to eliminate hundreds of pounds of plastic containers and packaging daily from mini shower bottles and soap. Only recycled paper products are used at the hotel.Landscaping.

Chemical free landscaping:

All of the fertilizers used for landscaping are all natural and chemical free. Native and climate-adaptive plants were used so water use for irrigating is very limited.

According to Pinetti, they have had the chance to welcome a lemur, an iguana, a whole flock of penguins and a small bear, as well as the more common cats and dogs.

Special pet-friendly services are also available, ranging from dog walking and local travel planning assistance to furry greeters.There is no extra charge for bringing a pet to a Kimpton hotel, where the price of a night’s stay generally ranges between $150 and $300. Since the green and pet-friendly markets are still growing quickly, several promising chains are just getting started.

Air New Zealand's BioFuelled Sucess !

Smiles plastered across the emerging pilots' faces and fists punching the air, the sight said everything about Air New Zealand's first commercial test flight powered by a biofuel success.

The airline's chief executive, Ron Fyfe, commented on the significance of the morning's exercise. "We are very proud at Air New Zealand and today what we have done with our partners is to chart a new course for the aviation industry the first step in making biofuels commercially viable," he said. "It represents one plank in our goal to become the most environmentally sustainable airline in the aviation industry."

Moments earlier, a Boeing 747-400, with one of its four engines powered by a 50:50 mix of the oily nut from the jatropha tree and traditional Jet A1 fuel, had touched down at Auckland International Airport after completing a two-hour test flight.

Some of the blended fuel will then be sent to the United States and Britain for further testing and, if all goes well, certification. Then begins the long road to production, during which the commercial viability of the alternative fuel will be intensely investigated. Air New Zealand said it expected biofuel to make up 10 per cent of its total fuel burn of 9 million barrels a year by 2013, reducing its carbon footprint by 400,000 tonnes a year. It was the first airline in the world to set such a target.

Carbon Offsets Kiosks in San Francisco

This spring, San Francisco International Airport will allow fliers to feel better about their gas-guzzling plane trips with certified carbon offsets available at airport kiosks.

The program will be jointly led by SFO and 3Degrees, a firm that sells renewable energy and carbon reduction investments. Thus far, SFO has invested $16,000 in the kiosks. According to airport officials, the carbon offset kiosks will allow passengers to input a destination into a computer that calculates both the trip's carbon footprint and the investment necessary to offset it. A credit card swipe will let travelers erase their guilt, and a printed receipt will act as proof of the good deed.

Details on the carbon offsets' cost to consumers are still fuzzy, but 3Degrees estimates that a trip to Europe will cost approximately $36. A similar program that was recently proposed by Denver International Airport is on hold due to lack of interest from vendors. But with fliers already wary of checked luggage fees, there is plenty of reason to doubt that anyone will want to pile on more expenses—even in environmentally-conscious San Francisco.

Boeing, Virgin Committing to Biofuel for Jets

Boeing joined Virgin Atlantic Airways and eight other airlines this morning to pledge to speed up the development of sustainable, second-generation biofuels for use in the commercial aviation industry. As members of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group, the aircraft maker and airlines will receive advice and support from both the World Wildlife fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The group, which includes leading refining technology developer Honeywell's UOP, requires any biofuel used by its members to perform as well as or better than traditional jet fuel while leaving a smaller carbon footprint. Members also pledge to use only renewable fuel sources that require minimal land, water and energy to produce, and that do not compete with food or fresh water resources.

Billy Glover, managing director of environmental strategy for Boeing, said the effort will allow airlines to take control of their future fuel supply while curbing the industry's impact on the environment. "The number one priority going forward is to complete thorough assessments of sustainable plant sources, harvesting and economic impacts, and processing technologies that can help achieve that goal," he said in a statement.

The eight other airlines in the group are Air France, Air New Zealand, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Cargolux, Gulf Air, Japan Airlines, KLM and SAS. In total, the nine airlines account for roughly 15 percent of commercial jet fuel use.

The creators are billing it as one of the coolest hostels in the world and it's undoubtedly one of the most novel overnight stays you are ever likely to experience. Welcome to the Jumbo Hostel -- an old Boeing 747 which is being converted into a 25-room hostel at the Stockholm-Arlanda airport.

The idea is the brainchild of Swedish businessman and entrepreneur Oscar Dios, who has been running hostels in Uppsala, Sweden for the past five years. Renovation work is underway on a plane which used to carry in excess of 350 passengers. Jumbo Hostel is scheduled to open for business in December 2008 and will provide accommodation for up to 85 guests.

While most large commercial planes end up in vast aircraft boneyards, some, like the Jumbo Hostel, find new lives. New York based urban architects Lot-ek plan to create a library in Guadalajara, Mexico, made by recycling 200 Boeing 727 and 737 fuselages. And Californian millionaire Francie Rehwald has started building a house from the parts of another scrapped 747.

Why should hotels be green ?

Haven’t you heard? Being green goes directly to your bottom line. Being green goes directly to a higher long-term value of your property. Being green goes directly to your front doors which open wide to bring guests back again and again. Being green goes directly to keeping staff long-term because management clearly cares for their health and well-being.

How does being green translate to your bottom line? When energy-saving measures are introduced, such as energy management systems, fluorescent bulbs, ceiling fans, linen cards, lights out cards, motion sensors for public rest rooms, meeting rooms, exercise rooms, etc., energy bills are much reduced.

When water-saving equipment and techniques are introduced, such as low-flow showerheads, 1.5 gpm aerators, serving water on request only in restaurants, 1.6 gpm dishwashing valves, low-flow toilets, waterless urinals, toilet tank fill diverters in older toilets and linen cards, water bills are reduced dramatically. A California GM received an award for reducing water usage at his property by two million gallons in one year. How? He fired the chef! The chef was well known for having water running in 4 or 5 sinks at a time defrosting food.

Waste hauling is a huge expense for a hotel which can be lowered drastically through recycling and avoiding wastefully-packaged products. Hoteliers can ask vendors to deliver products in minimal wrapping. Vendors can be asked to deliver products one day, and pick up the packaging materials the next day. The New Orleans Intercontinental started a recycling program and hired staff to separate the materials. Management was absolutely astonished to find that these employees were pulling $1,000 a MONTH of hotel property out of the waste stream—napkins, towels, spoons, etc.—all of which had clearly been discarded prior to recycling. A Chicago Hyatt reduced their waste hauling by 80%! They had the same experience as the New Orleans hotel, except their staff was pulling $3,000 to $10,000 a month of hotel property out of the waste stream.

Being green means guests, staff and management are healthier. There’s just no doubt that when odors, fumes, soot, droplets and residues of toxic, poisonous chemicals are not in the air, on our food or on anything we touch, we are not absorbing or breathing them. Sooner or later all properties will be sold, and any green property will demand a higher price because it’s value is much enhanced by lower utility bills per square foot, its healthier aspects and owner care.
None of us can be really green without the smart, innovative vendors who provide green products and services. Being green means supporting green vendors, listening to their sales staff, purchasing their products and services and cheering them on.

Ditch bottled water and instead use a refillable and reusable stainless steel water bottle.

Stay Eco-Do not disturb (the Earth, that is).Four-star green hotels show that eco-friendly doesn’t mean cockroach-friendly. You’ll get efficient lighting and water fixtures, alternative fuel vehicles, and recycling. If 10,000 people stay at hotels with efficient toilets, faucets and showerheads, each night we’ll save enough water to fill 11,263 whirlpool bathtubs.

Lighten your eco-baggage.Most luggage contains eco-unfriendly materials (like the plastic PVC, which lets off cancer-causing chemicals during production) that make us want to avoid the baggage carousel at all costs. We’ve got just as durable, just as attractive options in the bag, made from materials like veggie-tanned leather and hemp.

Sleeping at an airport overnight, once almost a sport for the young and short of cash, has become a lot more common lately, affecting even older and professional travelers. And a big reason is that airlines are no longer as free with complimentary hotel vouchers as they once were.

"Belt tightening by airlines over the last 18 months, and more so this year," is how Randy Petersen, editor of the online magazine InsideFlyer and the frequent-flier Web site FlyerTalk.com, explains it."They have to look at everything they spend a penny on," Petersen said. And because flights are fuller, he added, "they're not just dealing with a few passengers."

Bob Harrell, founder of Harrell Associates, an airline consultant, agreed. "If they're charging for extra bags, food and water, then the flip side is the airlines are going to go out of their way to minimize expenses on one side, while maximizing on the other," he said. Sleeping overnight in airport has become enough of a phenomenon that it has inspired one recent novel, "Dear American Airlines." The author, Jonathan Miles, said he was spurred to write the book after an unscheduled overnight stay at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.

An unscheduled overnight stay at a German airport inspired one business traveler, Frank Giotto, the president of Fiber Instrument Sales in Oriskany, New York, to create the Mini Motel, a one-person tent complete with air mattress, pillow, reading light, alarm clock and pillow (which he now sells for $39.95).Asked what airports would think of a tent city of his Mini Motels, Giotto expressed confidence."People sleeping in chairs don't seem to bother them," he said. "We could be forcing the airports to come up with a solution to respond to the tremendous need."

Together and individually, airlines are working hard to develop biofuels for their jets. One airline exec predicted that within the next five years we may be flying on jumbo jets powered by algae. With oil topping $140 a barrel, it is in the self-interest of airlines now to really push for green fuel alternatives.

But how far will it take us? And, at a time when the EU is rolling back biofuels targets, will the quest for new biofuels to power the airline industry (not to mention the military) mean more trouble with food prices?

Today, Sir Richard Branson continued his campaign to have his Virgin Atlantic Airways known as the world's most eco-friendly airlines by announcing a new partnership with General Motors and its "Project Driveway" alternative fuel test drive program. Following on the heels of Virgin Atlantic-Boeing bio-fuel flight from London to Amsterdam, he announced that Virgin will now use Chevrolet Equinox hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for its complimentary ground transfer service for upper class passengers at Los Angeles International Airport.

At a press conference the partnership, Branson noted he believes that government and industry investment in alternate energy sources is urgently needed as the world's oil supplies tightens. He further predicted oil prices at $150/barrel in 5-6 years due to diminishing supply and increasing demand. Stating that innovations in alternative fuels are so critical to the world's economic future, he warned that "without this (alternative energy development), the thing could go completely out of control."

The Chevy Equinox Hydrogen Fuel Cell model that will be used is part of the world's largest fuel cell test ever. Called General Motors' "Project Driveway," it will place more than 100 zero emissions electric vehicles powered by hydrogen on the streets of key markets in the US and around the world. The first vehicles will be tested in Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC, starting in late March .

The Chevy Equinox vehicles used in the Virgin Atlantic limo program and the Project Driveway tests are powered by General Motor's fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The Equinox models are cross-over vehicles that look and drive essentially like the production models of the Equinox found on the typical showroom floor. It has all the standard safety features including On-Star and the GM StabiliTrak stability system.

New Jet Engine Cuts Fuel Consumption

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Pratt & Whitney has created a jet engine that uses less fuel and emits less carbon dioxide and nitrogen-oxide at a time when rising jet fuel prices are crippling the aviation industry.The engine, now 20 years in the making, is scheduled for jets under development by Mitsubishi and Bombardier, and should operate in regular service by 2013, Wired reported.

According to the publication, the geared turbofan boasts a gearbox that allows the fan and turbine to spin independently. Fans perform better at low speed. The engine fan spins at about a third the speed of the turbine, resulting in an engine that needs less fuel and costs about a third less to maintain.

"For the next generation of single-aisle aircraft, there's no question that engine performance will be key," Alan Epstein, Pratt & Whitney's vice president of technology and environment, told Wired. "Both economically and environmentally, this engine will deliver significant benefits."

More efficient aircraft is on the mind of an industry that thas in recent weeks seen airlines impose baggage fees and slimmer service routes. Earier this month, several airlines, including Southwest, sought Pratt & Whitney's EcoPower engine wash service to reduce debris and drive fuel efficiency. Southwest expects the wash service will save it $20 million in fuel costs annually.

Carbon Neutral Scottish Bus

A Scottish bus company encouraged enough riders to donate their used cooking oil for biofuel production, that they can now go carbon-neutral, reports Environmental News Network:

"For the past six months, Stagecoach has been running eight buses on biofuels made from used cooking oil. That project has the makings of a true bartering scheme; in exchange for used cooking oil, passengers get a reduction on travel fares. The scheme is organized at Ayrshire Council recycling plant and has been met with tremendous enthusiasm of the population. Over 21 tonnes of used cooking oil was handed, marking an 100 percent increase over a period of six months."

Before January 2009, the company will have planted more than 140,000 trees on a plot of land of 60 hectares called Buccleuch Woodlands estates which is in Southern Scotland. Stagecoach says that the trees will offset all the CO2 produced by the Fife to Edinburgh network of buses until 2013.

Having garnered a lot of goodwill from the population in recent months through the biofuel initiative, Stagecoach now capitalizes on the positive vibes created by linking the green initiative with a new marketing campaign to get people driving cars to take the bus. The marketing campaign is especially effective because it links specific localities and bus networks to recognizable pollution reduction targets.

Europe Works to Promote Ethical Travel

South Africa's tourist organizations already use them and some European organizations are considering similar ideas. An international working group has been trying to lay down criteria for a seal here that would look at factors such as fair pay for workers."There have to be set working hours," said Fuchs. "Employees should have health and accident insurance, as well as unemployment insurance."

There's also widespread agreement that tour operators and companies should not get the seal. It should instead be awarded to products such as individual tours. The group has likewise agreed that the label should not focus on niche markets for do-gooders. "It should instead focus on mainstream tourism," says Fuchs. Certification would raise consciousness, a fair trade seal might make ethical selection easier Hartmann said he sees the merit of such proposals. "Consciousness in this area has grown, just like the evolution of organic food products, which are now on sale at every discount store." And just like organic apples, a seal of approval for fair trade travel would be useful, he adds. Not only would it have the bonus of providing a standard set of criteria, it would also add transparency. "It would make it easier to convey that 'this trip is OK,'" he said. Still, not everyone is convinced a seal is the best idea. "Certification is not cheap. It costs several thousand euros," said Rolf Pfeifer, Chief Executive Officer of Forum Anders Reisen, a group of travel operators dedicated to environmentally sound tourism. "A lot of hotels won't be able to afford it. Nor will a lot of small operators."

Pfeifer's company recently completed a report on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in tourism. The report is meant to serve as the basis for sustainability reports for other organizers to show how they comply. A recent decision by the forum requires all members to get CSR certification by the end of 2010. The certification would cover many of the same values covered by any fair trade seal.

The standard suitcase, which most of have lying in our closets, probably does an adequate job of holding all of our clothes and toiletries when we travel. As it sits there, it doesn’t pose much of a hazard to our environment. However, that piece of luggage has a story...
When it was created, manufacturers probably used two common, and toxic, chemicals: chromium and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These chemicals help give suitcases durability to withstand all of the flight-induced bumping and bruising. As these chemicals were helping to make that suitcase strong, they also offgassed their toxins, polluting the air.
Chromium is a carcinogen, but it is only toxic when inhaled. PVC is known to cause cancer.
As the suitcase ages and flies its last trip, it will be thrown out, ending up in a landfill where it will sit for years, waiting to biodegrade; if it’s plastic, it’ll wait forever.

Walk past the Glacier de Pré de Bar, cross the Grand Col Ferret (2537m) and drop into Switzerland through the Valley of La Fouly (1457m). Spend the night in the picturesque chalet-filled town of the same name.
Day 7- 8 Champex
An easier walking day today takes us past rivers, charming Swiss towns and beautiful countryside. Spend the night in the lovely lakeside town of Champex.
Day 9 Trient
Today’s tough hike starts at Champex d’en Bas and a steep switchback path heading upwards for great views of the Rhône Valley below. Take the Bovine Way, an old trail used to access the flower-filled summer cow pastures high above the valley. Continue on to Trient, Switzerland.
Day 10 Chamonix Valley
Saying good-bye to Switzerland, return to France via the Chamonix Valley.
Day 11 Chamonix

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide is introducing a new green hotel chain, called Element. The first hotel, scheduled to open this July in Lexington, Mass., is serving as a laboratory of sorts to explore the design, construction and operations for all future Element properties (the company plans to open more than 20 hotels by the end of 2009). Each Element hotel will be required to pursue certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Some of the certification requirements include using roofing materials that reflect heat from the sun; incorporating a comprehensive recycling system in the hotel; using chlorofluorocarbon-free refrigerants for heating, cooling and ventilation systems; purchasing wind power; and offering priority parking to those driving hybrid vehicles. Affordable Electric cars hit the U.S

PASADENA, Calif. -- Electric vehicle maker Think Global plans to bring its City car to the United States next year.The Norwegian company has created Think North America, announced at this week's Fortune Brainstorm Green Conference, to begin marketing and selling Think vehicles starting in 2009.

The first Think product to come across the Atlantic will be the City, a battery-powered, emission-free car that has a top speed of 65 miles per hour, can cross 110 miles on one charge and is 95 percent recyclable. The company plans to sell it for under $25,000. Produced in Norway, the City is slated to initially be sold in France, Switzerland and Scandinavia. The company's production plant near Oslo aims to churn out 10,000 vehicles a year starting in 2009.

Think established its North American arm with investments from clean-tech firms RockPort Capital Partners and Kleiner Perkins, Caulfield and Byers. Earlier this year at the Geneva Auto Show, Think unveiled its Ox concept, a five-seater with a range of 125 miles per charge.

The Kapawi project was initiated in 1993 by Carlos Perez Perasso, founder of Canodros and owner of El Universo, the major newspaper in Ecuador. Mr. Perasso was a man of vision and passion and his goal was to begin a new trend in ecotourism. By initiating and supporting Kapawi Ecolodge, in partnership with the Ecuadorian Achuar Nationality, NAE, the aim was to develop a genuine community based ecotourism project that generated a sustainable economic income and jobs to the Achuar. The Achuar people lead a relatively basic lifestyle in an area of 681.218 hectares in the Amazon jungle with a population of 6,000 people in 64 communities, and Kapawi Ecolodge was created in response to their need for a sustainable economic alternative. In 2005 Canodros created a new company called CEKSA (Complejo Ecoturistico Kapawi. S.A.), which is the new tour operator that will be in charge of running the operations of Kapawi Ecolodge. On the 1st of January 2008, Canodros transferred all the shares, assets and installations of Kapawi Ecolodge to the Achuar people.

The lodge accommodates up to 44 visitors with double and triple accommodation options, and was built in accordance to the Achuar concept of architecture.

Kapawi is the largest community-based project ever developed in Ecuador and was developed and built in co-ownership with the private enterprise; Canodros S.A. Kapawi was created to provide a high standard of tourism excellence in one of the most remote and pristine areas in the south east of Ecuador, away from oil exploitation and other destructive practices.

The project provides various benefits to the Achuar people. At the moment up to 70% percent of all the employees that work at the lodge are Achuar. Canodros also buys products and services for the lodge in the nearby communities. Tourists give a contribution of US $10 dollars as an entrance fee to Achuar territory. For these communities their main income comes from ecotourism.

Viva la Difference : Organic Wine in France

Although eating organic has caught on in France, drinking organic has been slow to follow. A growing number of wine-producers are re-discovering the joys of "le vins bio."
For years wine producers thought that in order to reap a good grape harvest they needed chemical weed killers and fertilizers. It was a time saving process, the soil needed less work and growers could expect a higher yield. However, it came with a price. Using these methods destroyed the microbes and bacteria in the soil, affecting the taste colour and aroma of the wine.
Luckily a growing number of French wine producers are re-discovering the importance of healthy soil and are using grapes grown from organic soil.

These organic growers do not use fertilizers fungicides or herbicides but encourage the build up of stable humus through composting. Weeds are allowed to grow, cut back, rot, and are then ploughed back into the earth. The soil is kept active using organic fertilizer and a controlled minimum of nutrients such as copper. At least three years are required to prepare the soil when changing from traditional to bio production.
Organic viticulture has increased though by 40 percent since 2001 especially in the south where the threat of diseases such as rot and mildew is less because of the warm dry climate. Wine producers are recognizing the increased quality of the wine and even in hostile areas like the Champagne region there are more demands for conversion.

As well as respecting the environment, the organic wine producer tends to his wine making with so much care that one can taste the love in the first sip. Isn’t it wonderful to wine and dine knowing that hangovers are a thing of the past?
